Teentrepreneurship: An Entrepreneurship Framework for At-Risk Teenagers in South Africa
Abstract
Youth unemployment rates appear to be at a point of no return. Oluwatayo and Ojo (2018) ascribe the high African youth unemployment rate to inequality, exclusive economic growth and youth marginalization. In addition, the South-African formal youth unemployment rate is reported to be a staggering 55.2% while the estimated youth underemployment rate is closer to 65% and in some regions 80% (Herrington & Kew, 2018; Tradingeconomics.com, 2019). There appears to be a disparity between the skills required by companies and those held by the youth labour force. Although entrepreneurship may be an option for these unemployed teenagers, the likelihood of a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood as an entrepreneur appears to be slim.
