Youth Entrepreneurship in South Africa and Uganda: An Investigation of the Influence of Mental Triggers

2022 Thesis/Dissertation Entrepreneurship

Abstract

Youth entrepreneurship has remained a challenge for young people, communities, and governments alike, although it has been touted as a panacea for poverty alleviation and job creation. In South Africa and Uganda, the contribution of youth-owned enterprises to the gross domestic product remains dismal. According to recent Global Entrepreneurship Monitor reports, the total early-stage entrepreneurial activity of South Africa is among the lowest in the world. Moreover, unemployment rates among South Africa’s youth exceed one-half of the youth population. Although Uganda ranks higher on the total early-stage entrepreneurial activity, only 20 per cent of the youth transitioned into stable or satisfactory work. Data from the Ugandan national statistics bureau indicates that about 92 per cent of youth were engaged in informal employment, earning only modest pay.
